KOTA KINABALU: A local film production company is contemplating producing a RM 3.5 million movie to be centred on a local legend, one of the four warriors fighting against colonial domination in Sabah. Producer Datu Omar Ali said the project Si Gunting evolves around a patriot of the Ranau people who had served as an inspiration in all aspects of nationalism and love for the country. In this respect, Mar Production Sdn Bhd had forged a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Koperasi Usahawan Muallaf Pedalaman Atas Sabah Bhd (Kompas) on a joint undertaking of the project, with funds from the National Film Development Corporation (Finas) and Mar Production irself. Omar said Si Gunting was a forgotten hero, unlike his compatriots Mat Salleh (Kota Belud), Antanom (Tenom) and Said Osman, who also fought against the foreign domination of Sabah. Casting for actors would be carried out by Kompas in Keningau, representing Mar Production, and shooting of the movie is expected to commence early next year, scheduled for completion within two months. Omar said the script for the movie is being done by a Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) professor. He hoped that Si Gunting would generate a higher sense of patriotism among Sabahan.
